David Kampf, a forward with the Toronto Maple Leafs, will compete for a title in his own nation. In order to proceed to the IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship final, Czechia defeated Sweden 7-3 thanks in part to a goal and an assist by Kampf. Kampf’s goal came late in the opening frame, with his team behind Sweden 2-1. He buried a pass from Martin Necas while he waited in the slot. Necas promptly shot the puck off of Kampf’s winning faceoff in the offensive zone, setting up Kampf’s assist on the game-winning goal. Kampf received a +4 rating at the end of the match.
With one goal and five assists in eight games during the tournament, the Toronto Maple Leafs player is tied for the team lead at +8. He has been one of the club’s best performers. This is the first time Czechia has advanced to the tournament final since 2010. They won the event that year by defeating Russia. In the decisive victory, former Maple Leafs player Ondrej Kase added a goal and an assist. Sweden and Pontus Holmberg will compete for a bronze medal after the defeat. With one shot on goal and no points at the end of the game, the Leafs center didn’t really contribute to the outcome. Sunday is the championship game in Prague.
