In an inspiring act of generosity that has resonated across the NRL, Cronulla Sharks star Nicho Hynes has donated the entirety of his $1 million bonus and endorsement income to a network of community-focused charities, with a major emphasis on homelessness support, mental health services, and Indigenous youth programs across New South Wales.
Hynes, one of the league’s most respected figures both on and off the field, made the announcement following the Sharks’ strong run this season and his continued leadership role within the club. While his on-field brilliance has earned accolades and financial rewards, Hynes chose to redirect those funds toward causes close to his heart.
“This community has supported me, shaped me, and stood by me—especially during some of my toughest moments,” Hynes said in a heartfelt statement. “There are families in the Shire and all over Australia doing it tough. If I can use my platform to make even a small difference, then that’s more valuable than any bonus.”
The $1 million donation will be spread across key organisations including homelessness shelters in Sydney’s south, Indigenous youth mentorship programs, mental health support services, and family crisis centres. Much of the work will focus on prevention, education, and creating safe spaces for those facing housing insecurity and emotional hardship.
Cronulla Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta applauded Hynes’ incredible contribution, stating: “Nicho embodies the spirit of the Sharks—humble, community-minded, and deeply connected to the people. His selflessness off the field is as impressive as his play on it.”
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo also praised the move, calling it “a shining example of the power of rugby league to uplift communities and inspire change beyond the stadium.”
