“This Means So Much!” – Sharks Legend Paul Gallen’s Surprise Move for Kyle Flanagan Will Shock Fans
Paul Gallen has been synonymous with the Sharks for two decades – but that didn’t stop him from taking part in a “special” moment with their bitter rivals, the Dragons.
The premiership-winning Cronulla captain is one of the club’s most beloved figures, playing more than 300 games in the black, white and blue jumper.
However, ahead of Kyle Flanagan’s 100th first grade game this weekend, Gallen was a surprise guest at St George Illawarra’s pre-game meeting.
Seven years ago, Gallen was the captain in the playmaker’s NRL debut and was invited by former Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan to be part of the ceremony on Thursday.
Obviously I watched him come through the grades and the junior system,” Gallen said.
“Congratulations on it mate, I wish you the best tomorrow – I wish all of you boys the best, I hope you go out there and perform for him.
“Every game in the NRL is hard these days … but go out there and do your best.”

The playmaker has endured a rollercoaster ride in the top grade, axed by both the Roosters and Bulldogs after starting his career at the Sharks, but has since landed on his feet in Wollongong under his dad.
“His first first grade game, Gal was captain and Val was in the team – they played Newcastle at Shark Park and won” coach Flanagan – who is close with Gallen after they won the 2016 premiership together – said.
“Gal presented Kyle with his first jumper … to give him his 100th I thought was fitting.
“He wrote on the back of his door, not quite sure what age he was, that his goal was to play 100 NRL games … he’s got there, so well done.”
The 26-year-old took in the emotional moment, surrounded by friends and family.
“Pretty special to be given my 100-game jersey by someone I looked up to,” Flanagan said in front of his Dragons teammates.
“I want to repay that faith and I can’t wait for Saturday night.”
Flanagan will start alongside Lachlan Ilias as the Red V take on old rivals Canterbury on Saturday.
